MONOTHANE 45 GLOSS
Single pack moisture cure polyurethane sets the industry standard of 45% solids, providing extremely good flow and leveling properties.
USES
- May be used for interior coating of ALL timber species, cork, particle board and concrete.
- Can be applied over TIMBERSEAL OR DUOTHANE FAST A/ DUOTHANE PART A and DUOTHANE PART B.
- Compatible with MONOTHANE HS 50 GLOSS, MONOTHANE 44 GLOSS & MONOTHANE LOW SHEEN.
FLOOR PREPARATION
New Floors:
Fine sand to a smooth finish (Not finer than #120 mesh). Hardwoods must not be burnished and grain must remain open. Vacuum thoroughly. Ensure the timber surface if free from dust, wax or oily substances.
Old Floors:
Clean with hot water and detergent. Roughen surface completely with 150 mesh screen back and vacuum thoroughly. Wipe floor with URETHANE COATINGS THINNERS. Test for compatibility by applying MONOTHANE 45 GLOSS on a small section of floor first. If ‘craters’ or ‘fish eyes’ appear, add 10 mls of FLOWMAX Anti Rejection Fluid per litre of MONOTHANE 45 GLOSS and refer to FLOWMAX directions.
APPLICATION
NB : Do not use MONOTHANE 45 GLOSS at temperatures below 10°C or above 30°C. On cold days, during the final floor preparation, wrap the drum in an electric blanket set on ‘1’ (low heat) or place the drum in a tub of hot water and operate building heating, (Air conditioning or portable oil filled radiator type heaters are ideal. Any type of heating with a naked flame or with very hot surfaces are not recommended). Turn heating off prior to application of coatings.
- Apply with a mohair roller, lamb’s wool applicator or brush, allow 4-6 hours to dry. Do not return unused material to the can. New cork and timber floors will need 3 and 2 coats respectively, sand with 150 mesh screen back between coats.
- Thoroughly clean the mohair roller, lamb’s wool applicator or brush in URETHANE COATINGS CLEANING SOLVENT. Dry all equipment before using.
- URETHANE COATINGS CATALYST may be added to the first coat of MONOTHANE to accelerate curing.
COVERAGE
10m² per litre. URETHANE COATINGS THINNERS may be added if MONOTHANE has thickened, or if a higher coverage and a thinner coat is required.
MAINTENANCE
MONOTHANE requires 7-10 days to fully cure by absorbing moisture from the atmosphere. Avoid heavy traffic during this period. Use protective pads under legs of furniture.
Regularly wipe over the floor with an anti-static mop or sweep with a soft bristle broom. We caution against the use of vacuum cleaners, particularly if the bristles are worn as the cleaning head may then scratch the floor. The frequency of cleaning is dependent on the level of traffic, amount of grit carried onto the floor, and activity of children, and pets etc.
To clean your floor, mix up to one cup of Methylated Spirits into a bucket of hot water, and mop the floor, regularly rinsing the mop. If the floor is particularly dirty, wash first with a non abrasive detergent then clean with the Methylated spirits and water solution – this will prevent streaking and smear marks that sometimes remain after use of detergents and/or household cleaners.

MONOTHANE MATT
Single pack moisture cure polyurethane that provides a dead flat finish. Sometimes used as an additive to MONOTHANE GLOSS to adjust gloss levels for a specific requirement. Recommended for internal use as a final coat.
USES:
- SHAKE WELL and/or STIR THOROUGHLY
- Provides a hard wearing Matt finish which maintains the natural character of timber.
- Apply over MONOTHANE HS 50 GLOSS, MONOTHANE 45 GLOSS, MONOTHANE 44 GLOSS or DUOTHANE.
- May be mixed with MONOTHANE GLOSS.
FLOOR PREPARATION:
Roughen surface completely with 150 mesh screenback and vacuum thoroughly. Wipe floor with URETHANE COATINGS THINNERS. Test for compatibility by applying MONOTHANE MATT on a small section of floor first. If ‘craters’ or ‘fisheyes’ appear, add 10mls of FLOWMAX Anti Rejection Fluid per litre of MONOTHANE MATT and refer to FLOWMAX directions.
APPLICATION:
NB : Do not use MONOTHANE MATT at temperatures below 10°C or above 30°C. Turn heating off prior to application of coatings..
- SHAKE WELL and/or STIR THOROUGHLY
- Apply with a short nap mohair roller, or brush, taking particular care to apply a very even coat. Allow 4-6 hours to dry.
- Thoroughly clean the mohair roller, lamb’s wool applicator or brush in URETHANE COATINGS CLEANING SOLVENT. Dry all equipment before reusing.
- Do not return unused material to the can.
COVERAGE:
10m² per litre. Thinning is not recommended.
SHELF LIFE:
This product is best if used within 12 months from manufacture (refer to batch number), when stored in unopened containers under normal conditions of temperature and humidity.
IMPORTANT NOTICE:
The gloss level of MONOTHANE MATT will increase as the drying becomes faster. Hence open areas, such as entrances, will tend to be glossier than areas with little or no airflow. The following recommendations are given:
- Restrict airflow by sealing under and around doorways, open fireplaces, windows and air-conditioning outlets etc. If a refrigerator and/or freezer is operating in or near the areas to be coated, the fan on the motor creates a draft which can influence drying rates and spread dust.
- In large areas try to ensure a wet edge at all times, otherwise an overlap line way appear after curing. Add 20-30mls of FLOWMATE wet edge extender per litre of MONOTHANE MATT.
- Upstairs floors will tend to be glossier than downstairs because solvent vapours are heavier than air and will drift to the lower level and thus retard the drying process.
- Some timber species, (notably Brush Box, Black Butt, Spotted Gum, Tallowwood ) secrete oils and waxes which may migrate to the surface of the coating causing surface defects. The addition of FLOWMAX Anti Rejection Fluid will assist to alleviate this problem.
- Monothane Semi Gloss, Monothane Satin and Monothane Matt are produced by adding varying quantities of a matting agent to Monothane Gloss. This matting agent is derived from very fine silica powder (not silicon). In some circumstances when Semi Gloss, Satin or Matt is applied directly over Timbermate Wood Putty white spots or lines appear. This is a result of a chemical reaction between the Silica and the Timbermate. Usually this can be prevented by applying a coat of Monothane Gloss over Timbermate (separating Timbermate from products containing silica) prior to applying Semi Gloss, satin or Matt.
MAINTENANCE:
MONOTHANE MATT requires 7-10 days to fully cure by absorbing moisture from the atmosphere. Avoid heavy traffic during this period. Use protective pads under legs of furniture.

Clean with hot water and detergent. Roughen surface completely with 150 mesh screenback and vacuum thoroughly. Wipe floor with URETHANE COATINGS THINNERS. Test for compatibility by applying SILVER SATIN on a small section of floor first. If ‘craters’ or ‘fisheyes’ appear, add 10mls of FLOWMAX Anti Rejection Fluid per litre of SILVER SATIN and refer to FLOWMAX directions.
APPLICATION:
NB : Do not use SILVER SATIN at temperatures below 10°C or above 30°C.
The gloss level of SILVER SATIN will increase as the drying becomes faster.
Add 20-30mls of FLOWMATE wet edge extender per litre of MONOTHANE SATIN.
- Monothane Semi Gloss, Monothane Satin, Silver Satin and Monothane Matt are produced by adding varying quantities of a matting agent to Monothane Gloss.
MONOTHANE SATIN requires 7-10 days to fully cure by absorbing moisture from the atmosphere. Avoid heavy traffic during this period. Use protective pads under legs of furniture.
Regularly wipe over the floor with an antistatic mop or sweep with a soft bristle broom.
SAFETY DIRECTIONS:
Usage of this material must be under well ventilated conditions to minimise inhalation of vapours. Wear respirator with filters that conform with AS1716. Asthmatics, the very young, elderly people and pets should leave the site during the first 24 hours. Prevent skin contact by wearing impervious gloves. Breathing of vapours is harmful and may cause lung irritation and allergic respiratory reaction. May irritate skin and eyes. Keep container firmly lidded, as this product cures when exposed to air. In case of spillage, cover with earth, sand or absorbent material. Remove from work area and cover with water for 24 hours prior to disposal.
WARNING FLAMMABLE:
Contains 520gms per litre of Aromatic Hydrocarbons. This drum contains volatile and flammable solvents and when applying the contents adequate ventilation to the outside must be provided. All potential sources of ignition (open flames, pilot lights, furnaces, spark producing electrical switches, etc) must be eliminated in or near the working area. DO NOT
SMOKE:
Keep drum closed when not in use.
FIRST AID:
If affected by inhalation of vapour, remove to fresh air. If breathing difficulty persists or occurs later, consult a doctor and have label ready. If swallowed, do NOT induce vomiting. Give water or milk.
CONTACT DOCTOR OR POISONS INFORMATION CENTRE Australia 131126.
In case of eye contact, flush immediately with water for fifteen minutes and call a doctor. In case of skin contact, remove contaminated clothing and wash skin first with Methylated spirits, then with soap and water.
MAINTENANCE OF MONOTHANE & DUOTHANE FLOORS
► Introduction: Maintenance of Monothane and Duothane Floors
MAINTENANCE OF MONOTHANE & DUOTHANE FLOORS
While polyurethanes are widely recognised as the most durable surface coatings for floors, they are inevitably subject to wear, particularly when any gritty substance is introduced onto the floor. Grit will act in the same manner as sandpaper, and large particles of grit under shoe soles or heavy furniture will not only cut through the coating but damage the timber or cork as well.Furthermore, it is important to understand that the average polyurethane coating system is only about 120 microns (0.12 mm) thick, and therefore cannot prevent indentation of timber when subjected to excessive forces such as occasioned by stiletto heels or certain castor wheels. The incidence of indentation will also be directly related to the density of the timber or cork; that is hardwoods such as Brushbox or Blackbutt are much less predisposed to indentation than softer timbers such as Baltic Pine or Cypress Pine.
► Using the Floor
USING THE FLOOR
Over the first week after the coating is dry it continues to cure –during this period avoid heavy foot traffic by removing shoes before walking on the floor.
Initially (particularly if walking on the floor with bare feet) you may notice footprints, often attributed to a ‘bloom’ from oily timbers. After a few weeks and a number of washes this will gradually stop.
The key to successful maintenance of polyurethane treated floors is the exclusion of any gritty substance from the floor. This can be achieved by the placement of a door mat outside each entrance and if possible a softer mat immediately inside each door –this will assist to remove any sand, grit and small stones from shoe-soles/feet, that when walked over the floor is abrasive, acting like sandpaper. Use runners over high traffic areas, and to further enhance the floor you may choose to place a rug or mat over it. However, please note that over time the colour of the uncovered section will become slightly darker than the covered section. If possible, every few months, move the rug or mat a short distance (50 to 150 mm), rotating in each direction of the compass –1st North, 2nd East, 3rd South, 4th West. This will assist to ‘blur’ the contrast between the lighter and darker sections of the floor. Do not put rugs or mats on floors for at least four weeks from the completion of the coating job.Like many finishing or covering products, exposure to direct sunlight will cause discolouration of the floor. To reduce fading and discolouring, filter direct sunlight with curtains or blinds
► Replacing Furniture
REPLACING FURNITURE
When replacing furniture or moving furniture do not drag it across the floor, and when wheeling heavy items (e.g. refrigerators) spread a ‘drop sheet’ directly over the floor and then place panels of Masonite on-top of the drop sheet,on which to roll the wheels (often, even if using carpet or mats the heavy weight will leave marks on the fresh coating). The first seven to ten days after the coating is completed are the most critical; during this period, ensure extra care is taken while the coating ages to its maximum hardness. It is also imperative that protective felt pads are fitted under legs of chairs and furniture
► Maintaining the Floor
MAINTAINING THE FLOOR
Regularly wipe over the floor with an anti static mop or sweep with a soft bristle broom. We caution against the use of vacuum cleaners, particularly if the bristles are worn as the cleaning head may then scratch the floor.
The frequency of cleaning is dependent on the level of traffic, amount of grit carried onto the floor, and activity of children, and pets etc.
► Washing the Floor
WASHING THE FLOOR
To routinely clean your floor, mix up to one cup of Methylated Spirit (alternatively White Vinegar) into three Litres (1/3 full bucket) of hot water, and mop the floor, regularly rinsing the mop. If the floor is particularly dirty, wash first with a non-abrasive detergent then clean with the Methylated Spirit and water solution –this will prevent streaking and smear marks (often very noticeable on a high gloss floor) that sometimes remain after use of detergents and/or household cleaners.
► Floor Polishes
FLOOR POLISHES
Under normal domestic conditions a polyurethane coating will last many years. However, in commercial locations or areas exposed to high traffic levels, it may be necessary to protect the coating with a sacrificial floor polish, i.e. the polish will take the brunt of the wear, and can easily be replenished when necessary. Suitable polishes are those based on a metal-link acrylic polymer, which can be readily removed by washing with ammonia solution if there is an excessive build up in non-traffic areas. These polishes are also suitable in restoring the gloss of a polyurethane floor which has not been excessively worn, but may have scuffed badly. Commercially available floor polishes suitable for polyurethane coated timber and cork floors are –Urethane Coatings Purashine (Gloss or Satin)
